It'll be alright on the night
The Schaf is making his last-minute prep for the first episode of The Great British Weather tomorrow. That is BBC1 19:30 for those in the British Islands; although I have no doubt you have it indelibly etched into you diaries!
Tomasz has kindly uploaded a couple of sneaky-preview {i} pictures onto Facebook and Twitter. Firstly, Tomasz doing his John Craven tribute, with the bright-red waterproof coat {ii}...
And here's Tomasz in more chique wear, lookingly effortlessly attractive...
I'm sure Tomasz will wow everyone with these new programmes, and show us all what we've been missing.
Meanwhile, if you fancy a wry chuckle, one of Quentin Letts's dispatches. Mr Letts is a columnist for the Daily Mail: So you may expect him to write of matters of grave national importance, political machinations, corruption in public life and so on. So what did he get indignant about last week? He whinges:"Windbags! Why can't TV weathermen cut out their self-indulgent prattle", without checking his mirror first.
Firstly Mr Letts shoots himself in the foot, by falling into the trap of prattle himself: "Forecasters could not appear superior boffins. They had to be popularised, made one with the lowest common denominator". He makes the all-too-frequent error of thinking the lowest common denominator is a bad thing. See here
Inevitably he mentions The Schaf: "Now we have the likes of Tomasz Schafernaker, posing topless in a gay magazine in his spare time". So what if he did, what's it got to do with his abilities as broadcast meteorlogist? This leaving aside the fact that Tomasz left the of BBC weather forecasts months ago, so Mr Letts is a little off the mark with "now".
Still he can always pick on the undeserving Chris Fawkes, who disgraces himself by having interests outside of work, mostly... wait for it... sports. Apparently parachuting is particularly objectionable; Mr Letts then clamours "nurse" {iv} and wishes to cut Chris's parachute strings. I think the nurse needs to visit Mr Letts first, if the anodyne Chris Fawkes inspires thoughts of murder in QL.
Then there's the unfortunate Alex Deakin who is a "pingy and zingy keep-fit type". What do these forecasters think they are doing, looking after themselves, instead of breathing and living meteorology. It's enough to make you burn you Licence Fee isn't it, and smash your telly up (BBC can ruddy well pay for the bill too).
Even worse Deaks has personality, a jovial one at that; poor Liam "dreadful windbag" Dutton was equally chastised by right-minded Feedback {iii} listeners, for much the same reason. Mr Letts goes one better, and then castigates weather presenters for ditching received pronunciation: "[It] has been replaced by a wittering Babel of regional accents, jagged Northern vowels, Fenland dipthongs, Estuarial glottal stops". It's not like the BBC should reflect the fact that it broadcasts to those outside the M25, or that only 5% of the British populace speak like Brian Sewell or Emma Thompson
Then of course chez Daily Wail, conformist austerity is the order of the day; cheeriness and individuality is to be condemned. Otherwise it may cause house-prices to collapse, which will make paedophiles give your lager-lout kids cancer. Or something.

Swansong?
It appears Tomasz will be on for the 23rd and 24th of October, for the lunchtime shift! Please, please, please can there be a Country Tracks then: Although there's little chance of a short-sleeved rugby shirt during this cold snap, but it would be a treat to see Tomasz in *those* jeans, maybe the last time for a while.
The 25th and 26th will see Tomasz doing the overnight stint-- so Shipping Forecast and BBC World-- Canadian fans rejoice for the latter (or wherever else you international Schaffanatics may lurk)! Also Radio 2, so a chat with the classy Janice Long on the cards for the wee hours of Monday morning. He also may be on BBC radio station near you (BBC Devon is often a good bet)
The 28th and 29th has Tomasz on the News Channel/BBC News At One, plus Radio 4 after You & Yours. Let's hope these appaearances will remind the Met Office and the Beeb what a superlative chap His Loveliness is!

Swelling for Dogger
Another treat for all you (would-be) mariners out there, as Tomasz was back on Radio 4 with The Shipping Forecast. Isn't there something soothing and re-assuring about The Schaf's voice? It has a magically and euphorically hyponotic quality for me; he could read the phonebook, and I'd be all ears.
Fast-foward to 1:20, in the next few days
On Radio 2, there have been adverts for the return of Weekend Wogan next Sunday; as Sir Terrence of Wogan reminds us, it's Children In Need {i} in a few weeks. I was thinking that we could petition Tomasz to a 2011 calendar, it would make a fortune for CIN! Perhaps we can suggest it on his Fbk page.
I don't know about you, but I'd like to have Tomasz against my bedroom wall in a different position twelve times a year.
Although if His Loveliness did have a foray into the world of modelling, he ought to watch himself... some strange characters haunt that scene....
{i} For the unintiated: It's an annual BBC telethon, usually the second Friday of November, been running since 1980. Terry Wogan has hosted it every time. The programme raises funds for disadvantaged children both in the UK and elsewhere.

Ahoy Tomasz
The Schaf undertook that great BBC Radio 4 institution this morning, the Shipping Forecast. It is pure poetry at the best of times {i}, but Tomasz's soothing voice, it takes on a whole different dimension. He's even gorgeous on the wireless too-- they do say the best pictures are on the radio.
Here he is, six days left to listen. Fast-foward to 01:06. I'm sure Tomasz is an expert in rising, backing and swelling-- as well as commanding the attention of sea men. I certainly "fall" for him, listening to him.
So no Tomasz today on Country Tracks, that honour fell to the endearing "wee" Matt Taylor. I know he has his fans out there; so since his fanblog has been discontinued, a treat...
This evening it was the dashing Alex Deakin for Countryfile, looking trim in his casuals-- giving some competition to Tomasz in the jeans department too! Here he is dishy Deakin this week, a slip-up with "Tuesday's chart"-- see it's not just Tomasz!

Va va voum
Many thanks to Matt for informing me about this: Yesterday on the News At One, Tomasz did an excellent ad-lib on that broadcast. He talked of weather having "va va voum" {i}, before switching from French, to an Italian-style hand gesture (akin to Gino Dicampo). I missed that!? Whadda mistake-a to make-a!
I've investigated the comment by John Barrowman (about Tomasz) in the Radio Times. At first it does sound like a dig "the last person I wanted to meet" [LOL], but actually the reverse is true...
I don't see why Tomasz needs sympathy because of this [scratches head]? I've never understood the issue people have with John Barrowman. I can understand that some people find him irritating on a personal level, he can be too 'full on' for some-- fair enough
However I note some object to him on a 'political level', usually these groupthink self-appointed voices of that pernicious fallacy, "the gay community". From what I can tell, the objections are because he's happy in himself, honest and out... but camp with it-- apparently that's not 'correct' behaviour. Well stereotypes exist for a reason, just go down to any pride festival or a gay bar. Anyone would think JB had burnt committed genocide or something-- what harm does he actually do? Beats me.
Besides there are people who aren't "stereotypically" gay in the media, such as Scott Mills... although I've heard these people complain that Scott isn't enough of gay man. I can only imagine these detractors have a chip-in-their shoulder, because they're insecure about their sexuality or define themselves by it-- and irked by public figures who are happy and secure in their sexuality [a psychologist writes...]
Laissez-faire I say: I like you John, if nobody else does: I think he's warm, indivudal, affable, intelligent, talented, fun, charismatic, harmless, compassionate, fun, charitable, amusing and a positive person. All the attributes I'd admire in Tomasz in fact... except for Tomasz is even/much better looking than JB
I can well imagine why John Barrowman wanted to meet The Schaf, and take him out for Sunday lunch-- I bet those two make a superb double-act. John Barrowman is very priviliged to go for dinner with His Loveliness {i}!
Sadly I'm don't move in the esteemed circles that Mr Barrowman does; nor do I possess his charisma, so the likelihood of my meeting Tomasz is low alas. Probably just as well, because I would be so nervous and probably a gibbering wreck! I'm sure Tomasz just as adorable off-screen though and a tygrysku.
Finally it appears that Dan Corbett will be doing Country Tracks tomorrow... so "little troublemakers", "lumps of treacle" and "whoosing" to be had. Tomasz is on overnight; just before 00:30 on Radio 4, as far as I can see. That's the blog, for now.
{i} Imagine getting beef, a couple of Yorkshire puddings and some warm gravy off Tomasz. Oof.

A sprinkling from Tomasz
The highlight from Tomasz's forecasts yesterday, was his description of showers-- talking about "sprinkling" and "treacling"-- those are nice images from The Schaf via his sumptuous voice. I'm pleased to say Tomasz was sporting his lovely sky-blue tie again, complements his equally lovely eyes.
I like how described South Yorkshire as a "golden land". In Carboniferous times that area was a tropical swamp... Barnsley hasn't changed much, other than it's not tropical anymore.

Colourful metaphors
We had a nice dusting of Tomasz today on the BBC News Channel, Radio 4 and News At One-- nice to see the pink benzene-pattern again {i}. Do I spot a nice tan too, complements the hair nicely.
On News At One Tomasz reckoned the deep frost last night would engender sluggish performances from cars and lots of colourful metaphors from drivers... well if Tomasz ever needs a jumpstart, I'm happy to oblige.

Interesting to see it's -99 in Penzance! Poor Tomasz seemed distracted towards the end of the forecast, I hope the gallery wasn't putting The Schaf off! Such behaviour on their part is far from a venial sin. Yes. [Adjusts frock-coat, grips pulpit]

Christmas cracker
We got a very special festive treat today; as our very own Christmas cracker presented the weather on the News Channel, BBC1 and Radio 4 today. He was sporting a resplendent Christmas tie too, red with silver stars on-- clearly the festive spirit has jingled his bells. His smile is a Christmas present in itself!
Thanks to Terratec365, we have a quadruple-bill of The Schaf-- rejoice...
Did any of you Schaffanatics have a white Christmas? I'm pleased to say I did, although the snowfall was actually in the early hours of the morning-- but there was a nice crisp half-inch layer of snow by the time I woke up.
Hope you've all had a great Christmas and you all got the presents you wished for. And I hope they didn't work Tomasz too hard today either!

Rock on Tommy
The Radio 4 continuity announcer linked to Tomasz's forecast today: "Now to the weather, perhaps with one eye on the weekend, here's Tomasz Schafernaker".
"Two eyes in fact Rory", came Tomasz's droll reply.
And what nice eyes they are-- and we only have eyes for Tomasz {iii}. Certainly better than looking outside; dense and raw fog all day round my neck of the woods-- only 5C. Clearly such damp conditions get to Tomasz; on the 11:28am bulletin, he had a coughing fit and dredged up some phlegm brulee. To be fair, he did the decent thing and swallowed {i}
Later our weather god was abused by Matthew Amroliwala. After some story featuring a cannon, Matthew suggested that poor Tomasz should be lined up and shot at {ii}, if he gives us bad weather news. No way to treat The Schaf!
I'm pleased to say his other forecasts went smoothly. Tomasz was worried the forecasts may be a bit boring with the "blocking high" sitting to north-east of the British Ilses. Tomasz could never be boring, especially with glossy striped pink tie and stubble. And an array of gorgeous smiles too!
It appears the Vale of York has become another favourite for Tomasz... not there's anything wrong with the low-lying land between the Vale of Mowbray and the Humberhead Levels! Well, apart from thick fog and frosts and the moment.

Caped crusader
Tomasz was on-duty for the late-morning shift at the News Channel, although Hilary Clinton's speech and visit to Pakistan dominated much of the morning's news-- and cancelled most of Tomasz's slots-- thus preventing his bromance with Simon McCoy blossoming further. Who does that Hilary Clinton think she is, eh? {i}

Tomasz was also on Radio 4. I notice the style of presenting has changed for R4 forecasts: Tomasz's wonderful prose has now been supplanted by a staccato summary for each region, reads too much like football results: "South-west England 15C and dry, Wales 13C with drizzle. Scotland 16C, dampness round the Trossachs".
Bring back the old-style forecasts Radio 4, we want to hear Tomasz and his mellifluous {ii} monologues. Otherwise it's Tomasz, but not as we know him...

Looking fine for the weekend
Tomasz was back today on Radio 4 and News At One, in a merry mood: "Sunny spells, that's our favourite weather phrase", he enthused. Tomasz's re-appearance this lunchtime would indicate that a Country Tracks performance for this Sunday is on the cards... fingers crossed.
Tomasz had the unshaven look again today, looks as though the designer stubble is here to stay! A bulletin from just before 11am today... it looks as if Tomasz was anticipating a customary 'clever' remark from Simon Coy at the beginning!

Stunning stubble
Tomasz was on form for his Radio 4 broadcast today, getting enthusiastic about a sharp contrast in temperatures last night: 3C in the depths of Scotland, whilst London enjoyed lows of only 16C, most curious.
The latter was due to a former tropical storm, which has dragged warm and moist air from the Azores. Also brought with it a large amount of rain for southern England, which Sophie Raworth teased Tomasz about-- which gave him a giggle on News At One.
He was wearing his lovely sky-blue tie today, plus he was cultivating stubble for the second day running-- a bit more obvious than yesterday. I look like tramp if I don't shave once a day, alright for some!
However I think Tomasz looks effortlessly gorgeous with or without stubble. Although stubble does add a certain something to his appeal-- what does anybody think?

Beautiful and crisp
Tomasz's dulcet tones featured on Radio 4 this afternoon, informing us that Sunday would be "beautiful and crisp". A little later on News At One the equally beautiful and crisp Tomasz gave the forecast.
It was a relatively straightfoward forecast, bar a droll remark that "even the clouds are watching us" and that he had "Red Arrows [on the chart], except they're white". At least Tomasz doesn't have to endure abuse from Sophie Raworth...
